# How ProofIt Technology Works

ProofIt uses cryptographic hashing, RFC 3161 trusted timestamps, and Ethereum blockchain records to create verifiable evidence of when digital content existed in a particular form.

## SHA-256 hashing

ProofIt generates a SHA-256 fingerprint of file content. Only the hash—not the original file—is sent to external timestamping and used for blockchain registration.

## RFC 3161 trusted timestamps

Where enabled, ProofIt requests a timestamp token from a Trusted Timestamp Authority (Sectigo). The signed token proves the hash existed at a specific UTC time and can be verified independently if retained.

## Ethereum anchoring

Relevant hash and certificate metadata are registered on Ethereum. Once written, that record is not deleted or reversed when a ProofIt subscription ends.

## Certificate fields

Typical fields: certificate ID, SHA-256 hash, Ethereum transaction reference, trusted timestamp and provider name where applicable, QR verification link.

## Independent verification

Third parties can verify certificates via https://proofit.biz/verify and related evidence. This supports existence, time, and integrity—not automatic legal ownership.
