# How ProofIt Works

ProofIt turns a private file into timestamped, independently verifiable evidence of when that content existed in a particular form.

## Steps

1. Upload your file — original content stays private.
2. Generate a SHA-256 hash (file fingerprint).
3. Where enabled, request an RFC 3161 trusted timestamp (hash only; e.g. Sectigo).
4. Register the hash on Ethereum.
5. Receive a certificate with ID, hash, blockchain reference, TSA details where applicable, and QR verify link.
6. Verify anytime at https://proofit.biz/verify

## Retention after cancellation

- Original uploaded files: deleted after 30 days.
- Certificate records: accessible for 1 year; after file deletion, re-provide the file to verify the original content again.
- SHA-256 hash/record: permanent.
- TSA evidence: treated as permanent if you retain the token.
- Blockchain record: permanent; not deleted or reversed on cancel.

Evidence of existence, time, and integrity is not the same as legal ownership.
